Cover-Up Tattoos in Glasgow

Got an old tattoo you no longer love? A cover-up turns it into something you will be proud to show off. At Sugar Skull Tattoo Studio in Glasgow, cover-ups are one of our specialities. Your artist designs a new piece around the old tattoo - bigger, bolder, and made for you.

How a cover-up works

A cover-up does not erase the old tattoo. Instead, your artist uses its lines and shading as part of a new design. Because the new tattoo has to sit over the old one, a cover-up is usually:

- Larger than the tattoo it covers

- Darker or bolder in the areas where the old ink shows through

- Designed around the old tattoo's shape, not against it

That is why every cover-up starts with a free consultation. Your artist looks at the old tattoo in person, tells you honestly what is possible, and designs something that works with it - not a copy of a design from somewhere else.

Can any tattoo be covered up?

Most tattoos can be covered, but not every tattoo can be covered in one session, and not every idea will work over every old tattoo. It depends on the size, darkness and age of the old tattoo, and on where it sits on your body.

- Faded, smaller, lighter tattoos are the easiest to cover.

- Dark, dense or very large tattoos may need a bigger, bolder design - or more than one session.

- Some tattoos need laser fading first. If that is the case, your artist will tell you honestly at the consultation instead of promising a result the tattoo cannot deliver.

If a cover-up is not the right answer for your tattoo, we will say so - and talk through the other options with you.

Our cover-up process

1. Free consultation. Bring a clear photo of your old tattoo, or just come in and show it to us. Tell us what you would like instead - a style, a subject, or just a feeling.

2. Honest advice. Your artist will tell you what can be covered, what the new design needs to be, and how many sessions it is likely to take. No pressure, no obligation.

3. Free custom design. Your artist draws your cover-up design specifically for you and your old tattoo, and refines it with you until you are happy.

4. Your appointment. The studio works strictly by appointment, so your session is unrushed and focused. Your artist will walk you through everything before the machine starts, and give you full aftercare guidance afterwards.

What makes a good cover-up design?

Good cover-up designs use bold shapes, strong shading and clever placement to draw the eye to the new artwork. Styles that often work well include black-and-grey realism, bold colour work, floral designs, geometric patterns and large-scale pieces. Your artist will recommend the style that fits your old tattoo - and your taste - best.

Cover-up tattoo FAQs

Do cover-up tattoos cost more?

Every piece is quoted individually at your free consultation. The price depends on the size, detail and number of sessions your cover-up needs. You will always get a fixed quote before any tattooing begins.

Will the old tattoo show through?

A well-designed cover-up hides the old tattoo in the new artwork. Your artist will be honest with you about what can be fully covered and what may still faintly show - before you commit to anything.

Do I need laser removal before a cover-up?

Not always. Many tattoos can be covered directly. If your tattoo is very dark or dense, your artist may suggest a few laser sessions first to fade it, which makes a much better cover-up possible.

How many sessions does a cover-up take?

It depends on the size and darkness of the old tattoo. Smaller cover-ups are often done in one session; larger ones may need two or more. Your artist will tell you at the consultation.

Can you cover up a tattoo with a lighter design?

Usually not directly - a lighter design cannot hide darker ink underneath. Your artist will design something that works with the old tattoo's darkness, or suggest fading it first.
